Townhall meeting on Ramsey County’s bail reform effort set for Tuesday

A townhall on Ramsey County’s bail reform effort will be held Tuesday night. For the past three years, the county has been taking steps to reform its bail system and eliminate the disparities it can create. A work group includes the Ramsey County Attorney and Sheriff’s offices, St. Paul police, the nonprofit Justice Point and crime victims.Among the goals: moving away from the current cash bail system to one based on risk. A pretrial risk assessment would be administered — which would conclude while the individual is being booked into jail — to determine if they can be released until their first court appointment, county officials say.The county is one of seven sites selected across the country to be granted five years of research and policy support from Arnold Ventures to carry out the effort. The townhall will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Amherst H. Wilder Foundation, 451 N. Lexington Parkway, in St. Paul. The public can also attend via Zoom.To register,...Where will Gophers football look next in NCAA transfer portal?

All helped fill positions of need. The two headline additions are Indiana running back Trent Howland, a bruiser at 6-foot-3 and 230 pounds, and Florida International (FIU) defensive lineman Jordan Guerad, a 6-3, 295-pound nose tackle named first team all-Conference USA this season. The Gophers also added a defensive end in JUCO product Eddy Toussom from Navarro College in Texas and a cornerback in Ethan Robinson from Bucknell.Since the end of the regular season in late November, the Gophers have had seven total scholarship players exit via the transfer portal, and with Sunday’s influx, now five players have announced they will come to the U starting in 2024.Each one of the additions can be tracked to revisions made on the Gophers roster at those position group, consider...St. Paul investigate fatal shooting in Hamline-Midway area

Nearly 100 Swissport cargo workers at the Denver International Airport are on strike Monday, protesting unsafe work conditions they say the company has been ignoring for more than a year. The strike that began last night is set to last through the day Monday, with a rally of the striking workers starting outside DIA’s Main Terminal at 10:30 a.m.“It’s a big ask to get people to risk their job in this way, even though it’s legally protected,” said Andrew Guttman, who works as a cargo agent for Swissport. Jodeh: If “cease-fire” becomes taboo, what’s next, “peace”?

The images of mass graves, dead babies, grieving families, and absolute destruction have left me numb, enraged, depressed, and in shock.I am Palestinian. They are Palestinian. I feel helpless.Even as an elected official, I feel helpless. And my Jewish colleagues have expressed the same feeling of helplessness. And like many, I have cried for peace — cried out for an end to the violence, an end to the carnage, an end to this cycle of killing. I know I am not alone. And yet – there has been incredible pushback over the calls for cessation of violence, and specifically around one word, “ceasefire.”And though I have spoken to many, I am left wondering, “Is asking for a ceasefire unreasonable? Is even using the word “ceasefire” unreasonable? Why is wanting an end to the violence so inflammatory?”This past week, I penned an open letter addressed to the Colorado congressional delegation to urge the administration to push for an immediate, bilateral cease-fire.The letter, says th...LAX passenger arrives on international flight without passport, visa, ticket: report

A Russian man flew from Europe to LAX without a passport, visa or plane ticket last month, and officials have no idea how he did it. Neither, it seems, does the man himself.Sergey Vladimirovich Ochigava faces a charge of being a stowaway on an aircraft related to a Nov. 4 flight, but according to a report by Jason Koebler published jointly by 404 Media and Court Watch, he "was not a stowaway in the traditional sense.""[Ochigava] seemingly interacted with flight crew, ate two meals on the plane, spoke to other passengers on the flight, and, at one point 'attempted to eat the chocolate that belonged to members of the cabin crew,' Koebler wrote. "The affidavit states that 'most' of the crew noticed him on the plane, and said he was sitting in a few different seats, but that nothing else seemed amiss."Despite being very visible to many on the plane, Ochigava, an economist, had apparently evaded security in Copenhagen, Denmark, from which his flight departed.Ochigava was not on the fligh...Latest news
