HALLE, Germany (AP) — Last year’s Wimbledon runner-up Nick Kyrgios withdrew from the Halle Open on Monday in his latest setback as he tries to recover from a long-running knee injury.“I tried everything here in Halle the last couple of days, but then I had to make the decision to pull out”, Kyrgios said in a statement on the tournament website. “I want, when I play, to deliver a performance like last year when I was in the semifinals. But that will really not be possible.”Tournament organizers said Kyrgios was “still suffering from the aftereffects of a complicated knee injury which had put him out of action for around seven months,” adding that he felt a recurrence of the knee issue while training in Halle.Kyrgios, who had knee surgery in January, returned to action last week for the first time since October in a straight-set loss to Wu Yibing at the grass-court Stuttgart Open. Insider Q&A: Lithium batteries have a 4-hour limit. Mateo Jaramillo hopes to solve that

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 11:43:00 GMT

Wind and solar power are sometimes dinged for not producing electricity 24 hours a day, but one of the most abundant minerals on the planet, iron, could be key to changing that. Form Energy, founded in 2017, recently broke ground in West Virginia on its first commercial-scale factory to make iron-air batteries — totally different from lithium ion. The company’s goal is to one day help supply the electrical grid across the United States with renewable energy 24 hours a day and slash the need for burning coal and natural gas, polluting energy sources we currently rely on.CEO Mateo Jaramillo spoke with The Associated Press about progress toward achieving this vision. The interview has been edited for clarity and length.Q: Why do you consider batteries a climate solution?A: When I left divinity school in 2004 I made a sector bet and figured at some point, society will want effective energy storage. I grew up in Salinas, California, which is an agricultural town, and my parents wor...

Ukraine dam disaster: WHO requests access to Russian-occupied territory

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 11:43:00 GMT

The World Health Organization (WHO) has requested that Russia allow aid workers into territory seized from Ukraine in order to help people affected by the collapse of the Nova Kakhovka dam. In an interview with POLITICO, Hans Kluge, the director of the WHO’s Europe office, said the health authority is assisting flooded zones in Ukraine, sending people and equipment to help with disaster relief. Around 300 WHO health workers have been mobilized, along with medical kits to care for about 16,000 people. Twenty thousand cholera laboratory test kits have been sent to strengthen disease surveillance efforts. Kluge said that the WHO was also concerned with the health situation in territory controlled by Russia, to which it doesn’t have access. The now-defunct Nova Kakhovka dam straddled the Dnipro River in Ukraine’s Kherson region, which is mainly under the control of Russian forces. The structure was critically damaged on June 6 and since then dramatic flooding has affe...

JENIN REFUGEE CAMP, West Bank (AP) — The Israeli military raided the West Bank city of Jenin on Monday, striking the refugee camp with helicopter gunships. This has triggered the most ferocious fighting in the occupied territory in years, killing five Palestinians, including a 15-year-old boy, and wounding over 91 others, health officials said, including 12 in critical condition. Seven Israeli soldiers were also wounded, the army said.During nearly 10 hours of fighting, Israeli security forces faced off against Palestinian militants with gunfire, armored bulldozers and missile fire from at least one Apache helicopter.
