Barnett struck McGill, who was outside the deli. McGill later died at a hospital. At a news briefing following the shooting on June 8, D.C. police Commander James Boteler said the incident started as a “dispute” between at least three men in the entryway of a deli. The argument spilled outside and turned violent, ending with a spate of gunfire.“It doesn’t appear, watching the video that we’ve recovered, that our victim in this case was involved in the emerging dispute at all,” Boteler said. “We believe he had just been somebody who ...

Chicago Cubs drop series opener 6-2 as Milwaukee Brewers 6-2 pounce on Jameson Taillon in the first inning

Published Sun, 16 Feb 2025 15:14:01 GMT

Jameson Taillon’s first season in Chicago has largely not played out how he and the Cubs envisioned.Lately he has pitched more like the version both sides hoped for when he inked a four-year, $68 million contract in the offseason, posting a 3.98 ERA and pitching into the sixth inning in eight of his last nine starts. Taillon knows the rotation is a big factor in what happens in the final month of the season as the Cubs try to get back to the postseason for the first time since 2020.“I feel like it’s a cliché, but starting pitching sets the tone for everything,” Taillon told the Tribune over the weekend. “So if we want to make a push and want to go where we’re trying to go, I feel like it starts and ends with pitching in general, but starting pitching always sets the tone.“For myself, I feel the ship has sailed as far as getting my numbers where I want them to be this year, and I’m not worried about it. All season long, the Red Sox have stayed afloat due to the newfound depth in their farm system. It’s how they’ve stayed somewhat in the Wild Card race far later in the summer than most experts projected, and why they are a fourth-place team with a winning record, rather than a last-place team under .500.But at this point in the season, it’s becoming clear that as deep as they’ve gotten compared to the last few seasons, it’s just not enough to carry them into October, past more complete, healthy teams.Red Sox starting pitchers have struggled to go deep into games, and Monday night’s 13-5 loss was no exception. Chris Sale lasted 4 ⅔ innings, and after he departed, Kyle Barraclough pitched the remainder of the game, wearing an unimaginable loss and 10 earned runs to protect the team’s depleted bullpen. The game started out well enough. Sale began with back-to-back strikeouts and worked around a two-out walk for a scoreless first. He was able to k...
