Movie review: ‘The Exorcist: Believer’ an exhausting, unnecessary reboot

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 20:05:18 GMT

Once again, David Gordon Green and Danny McBride have taken it upon themselves to futz about with a 1970s horror classic at the behest of horror uber-producer Jason Blum. So far their track record ranges from “pretty good” (“Halloween”), to “should’ve never seen the light of day” (“Halloween Kills”), to “huh?” (“Halloween Ends”), so expectations should be riding low for their take on the 1973 William Friedkin classic “The Exorcist,” now re-imagined as “lega-sequel” “The Exorcist: Believer.” Keep those expectations planted firmly in the gutter because after this encounter, you’ll likely be left thinking, “can Pazuzu just give it a rest?”“The Exorcist: Believer” is an exhausting affair, an unrelenting film that attempts to cover up its lack of shock and suspense with a kind of cinematic bludgeoning: a battering about the face and head delivered via smash cuts, jump scares, overlapping sound design and chaotic camerawork. Yet despite all this stylistic violence, all the demonic histrio...

Trio of forwards remain in San Jose Sharks organization after being waived

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 20:05:18 GMT

Forwards Oskar Lindblom, Ryan Carpenter, and Jacob Peterson all cleared NHL waivers Saturday and will now report to the San Jose Barracuda, the Sharks’ AHL affiliate.Lindblom, Carpenter, and Peterson were all waived by the Sharks on Friday, giving other NHL teams an opportunity to put in a claim for one or more of them and potentially add them to their rosters. With the 31 other NHL teams now passing, the trio now joins a Barracuda team that opens its regular season next Friday at home against the Rockford IceHogs. The Barracuda also plays an exhibition game against the Bakersfield Condors tonight, but Lindblom, Carpenter, and Peterson will not play.If nothing else, by having all three remain in San Jose, the Sharks now enjoy some greater organizational depth up front should injuries begin to affect the NHL club.Of the three forwards, Peterson might have been the likeliest to get claimed because of his production last season and relatively inexpensive salary cap hit.Peterson, 24, was...

LILLE, France (AP) — England gathered its senses from 17-8 down against Samoa and avoided one of the greatest Rugby World Cup upsets by edging a thrilling pool match 18-17 on Saturday.Pool D was already won by quarterfinal-bound England which wanted to maintain momentum into the knockout stage next week. But a sloppy, second-rate performance was exploited by a fired-up Manu Samoa, who pulled out one more final trick to almost complete a shock win.Wing Neria Foma’i was freed by fullback Duncan Paia’aua and was flying toward the tryline. He was eight meters from history when he was brought down from behind by England’s oldest back, replacement scrumhalf Danny Care. Foma’i’s pop-up pass was knocked on and the chance died for Samoa.Samoa scored two converted tries and had two other tries ruled out in a second quarter in which England was blown away.
