By Joshua Goodman and Jim Mustian | Associated PressTAMPA, Fla. — When police arrived at his house to investigate a hit-and-run, Joseph Ruddy, one of the nation’s most prolific federal narcotics prosecutors, looked so drunk he could barely stand up straight, leaning on the tailgate of his pickup to keep his balance. But he apparently was under control enough to be waiting with his U.S. Justice Department business card in hand.“What are you trying to hand me?” an officer asked. “You realize when they pull my body-worn camera footage and they see this, this is going to go really bad.”That footage obtained by The Associated Press showed Ruddy apparently attempting to leverage his position to blunt the fallout from a Fourth of July crash in which he is accused of drunkenly striking another vehicle and leaving the scene. But despite being charged, the 59-year-old Ruddy remained on the job for two months, representing the United States in court as recently as l...Stanford faces mighty challenge against USC, Caleb Williams

Stanford might face the biggest challenge it will have all season when it plays at No. 6 Southern Cal on Saturday night.Reigning Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams has picked up where he left off, completing 74 percent of his passes with nine touchdowns and no interceptions as the Trojans beat San Jose State 56-28 and Nevada 66-14.The USC quarterback is fourth in the nation in passing efficiency (236.4) and fifth in yards per pass attempt (12.2), but his ability to keep plays alive and scramble really separates him.“You have to keep him in the pocket,” Stanford coach Troy Taylor said. “So you have to get pressure on him but try and contain him. The elongated plays are difficult to cover. He’s a player that doesn’t really have any weaknesses and he has exceptional talent around him. You have to cover for a long time and contain a guy who is a great thrower and a great runner.”Related ArticlesCollege Sports | Stanford-USC history: No shortage of great moments in the centu...Pleasanton’s Stable Cafe is hanging up its boots — will it return?

PLEASANTON — Esther Hall had a secret. One year ago, in September, Hall decided it was time to close the Stable Cafe, the breakfast diner she has owned at the Pleasanton fairgrounds for more than 30 years.Hall told no one outside her immediate family. In the months since, she continued serving and cooking for her regulars, who have become a second family comprising horsemen, military veterans, members of local service clubs and others.“I was weighing so much,” Hall said in an interview at the diner, bacon sizzling on a burner nearby. “I miss my kids. I miss my grandkids. But if I leave, will I miss this family more?”The secret escaped in August, when Hall — who is taking her RV and moving to Utah to be closer to her children there — announced the Stable Cafe would be hanging up its boots. The restaurant’s last day was Friday. The final farewell drew a hearty crowd. And many customers had dropped in to pay their respects beforehand. PARIS (AP) — France’s players embarked on a lap of honor at Stade de France after ending New Zealand’s unbeaten run in the Rugby World Cup pool stage by 27-13 on Friday.Following a rousing opening ceremony that showcased French culture, the vaunted French team achieved a statement win against the three-time champion All Blacks. A first World Cup title looked within reach after lighting up its home tournament on a sweltering opening night.“The fact is they had won all of their 31 (previous) pool games,” France coach Fabien Galthié said. “We’ve ticked a box.”France’s second straight victory against New Zealand at Stade de France, two years apart, also inflicted a second straight defeat on the All Blacks in two weeks.“It’s incredible to think that you’ve put nearly 30 points on the All Blacks,” said France captain Antoine Dupont, who had a relatively quiet 50th test. “We have gained a collective confidence.”But France had to overcome conceding tries at the start of ea...Novak Djokovic hangs up the phone on Ben Shelton to reach his 10th US Open final

NEW YORK (AP) — Novak Djokovic limited big-serving Ben Shelton to five aces and broke him five times. He pushed back when the 20-year-old unseeded American produced a late stand that got the home crowd into the match. And after finishing off a 6-3, 6-2, 7-6 (4) victory to reach his record-tying 10th U.S. Open final, Djokovic added a touch of insult to injury by mimicking the kid’s “Hang up the phone!” celebration gesture.Djokovic then pointed to his temple and pounded his fist on his chest, before a stone-faced Shelton met him at the net for the most perfunctory of handshakes. A year after Djokovic could not travel to the United States for the Open because he is not vaccinated against COVID-19, the 36-year-old from Serbia is one victory away from a fourth title at Flushing Meadows and 24th Grand Slam championship overall.“These are the kind of matches and occasions that I still thrive on. They still get me going and inspire me to wake up and work hard like the young guys,” said...United jet engine broke up over Denver after lax inspections: NTSB report

WASHINGTON (AP) — An engine on a United Airlines jet broke up over Denver in 2021 because of wear and tear on a fan blade that was not adequately inspected for signs of cracking, federal investigators said Friday. The National Transportation Safety Board said manufacturer Pratt & Whitney did not call for inspections to be done frequently enough, which allowed tiny cracks to grow undetected until the fan blade broke. Trump lawyers move ‘insurrection’ clause lawsuit to federal court The NTSB said the design and testing of the engine inlet contributed to the severity of the situation, and other factors made the engine fire worse than it should have been. The right-side engine of the Boeing 777 broke apart shortly after takeoff from Denver International Airport, raining parts over suburban neighborhoods. The pilots declared an emergency and landed the plane safely 24 minutes after takeoff.Pieces of the engine inlet, fan cowls and thrust reversers broke off and fell on a public park ...Latest news
